A Kings Feast – Kings Heath Street Festival

Well, that took longer than expected to get back to you all! My main laptop died last weekend, hence the delay in getting back to blogging. No matter, the spare has been brought in so I can continue telling you lovely folks about food in and around Birmingham. Anyway….back to it.

As you may be aware, we had been to Birmingham Independent Food Fair in the morning so our bellies were a little full. However, there’s always more room for streetfood! A short bus ride away is Kings Heath, a bustling suburb with a burgeoning streetfood scene (mainly due to BrumYumYum and their #KingshEATh at the Churchyard).

Today’s event was a slightly different affair from the usual as York Road was closed off by Enjoy Kings Heath to celebrate all that’s great about Kings Heath. It was a busy affair:

The crowds were heaving by the time of our arrival. I had one particular stall in mind so Wifey and I battled through to the other end of the street.

Ah, the glorious sign of Andy Low’n’Slow. Regular readers may know he’s a favourite of mine and I recently got to experience their food within four walls at Bar Opus.

The queue had formed by the time of our arrival.

I’d managed to bag an Ox Cheek taco reservation in advance and Andy set to work:

The ox cheek tacos were as stunning as always and what I’ve learnt to expect from the meat maestro.

When the smoked cheek combined with the creamy goat’s cheese, it was a glorious combination and they didn’t last long between Wifey and I.

Post meaty heaven, it was time to stroll back to the other end of the street and see another streetfood stalwart, Buddha Belly. Run by Masterchef 2012 contestant Sai Deethwa, it brings a bit of Thai streetfood to Birmingham. They were doing a roaring trade by the time we had fought through the droves.

Our selection was crispy chicken with noodles:

And what a combo: a generous portion of chicken inside the crispy batter and a smooth sweet / peppery sauce, partnered with thin Singapore-style noodles with heat underneath them and crunchy veg to finish.

With that, it was then I found my stomach does have a limit (it was a shock to me too!). A quick hello to Pip of Pip’s Hot Sauce, also pulling double duty that weekend with Independent Food Fair and Kings Heath.
